Welshpool bowling alley and youth cafe plans revealed

A mini ten-pin bowling alley and a youth cafe could be built in a Powys town, it was revealed today, with the town council wanting to improve leisure facilities.

Welshpool Town Council said it was looking into the possibility of using the town hall basement for leisure purposes.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said the council was in the process of submitting a planning application to change its use.

He said: ” It could include a mini ten-pin bowling site or a youth café to give youngsters in the town more to do but plans are still very much in the early stages.

“At the moment the basement of the town hall is just an empty room that is not being used. It is a really good size, it covers about two thirds of the town hall.

“It is a shame to have such an unused space so we have decided to submit a change of use planning application.

“The town wants it to be used for leisure purposes.”

Councillor Alan Crowe, for Welshpool, said he thought the youth cafe and mini ten-pin bowling alley were both excellent ideas.

He said: “We have space in the basement of the town hall to do both but plans are still very much in their early stages and we need to get permission to change the use of the space first before we can do anything else.

“It’s a great idea and I personally think it will be great for people of all ages in the town and provide a lot more for the youngsters to do.”

He said the proposals would form part of the “Welshpool-Going Ahead with Pride Plan”, which is currently the subject of a public consultation in the town.

The scheme is asking residents to put forward one thing they would like the council to do which would improve Welshpool.
