Lead thieves repeatedly hit Ellesmere Town Hall

Thieves have stolen metal from a north Shropshire town hall four times in the last week and the £5,000 needed to replace it will have to come out of the public purse.

The offenders have removed large amounts of lead from Ellesmere Town Hall.

The first incident happened on September 2, with further thefts on Friday, Sunday and Tuesday.

Lincoln McMullan, member of the Ellesmere Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is a terrible thing which I am afraid seems to be happening all over the place because people are so short of money. Perhaps we should look into ways of using something other than lead, which is worth a lot of money.”

Councillor Pat McLaughlin, Ellesmere mayor, said: “It is very frustrating that the town hall has been targeted four nights out of six in the last week and what the public need to realise is that money to replace the lead and to make the building watertight will come out of their own pockets through council tax.”

CCTV from the scene is being examined and forensic investigators have also attended. Police say thieves will have anti-vandal paint on their skin, clothes and vehicle.

Two offenders in their 20s or early 30s are believed to be involved with the incidents, which took place between about 10.30pm and 11.30pm.

One is between about 5ft 9ins and 5ft 11ins tall with sharp features and light, very short hair. He was wearing a hooded tracksuit and white trainers. The second offender is shorter and stockier. He was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top.

They were using a dark-coloured vehicle, similar to a Vauxhall Vectra, which had a tow-bar fitted.
