Explosives stolen from Bridgnorth railway station
Thursday 9th September 2010, 2:59PM BST.
Dangerous explosives which send shrapnel flying into the air when they go off were today stolen from a railway station in Bridgnorth.
The detonators were in a safe taken from a building at the rear of the Severn Valley Railway attraction.
Police today issued an urgent warning to trace the explosives, which could cause serious injury.
The safe, which has a digital keypad, was taken between 6.50am and 9.30am along with a staff member’s bag.
Inside were four metal tubes, each containing 12 yellow disc-shaped detonators that are used on the tracks to alert train drivers to problems further up the line by making a loud bang.
While not a large explosion, the shrapnel released by the detonation could cause serious injury were it to go off close to a person, police said.
David Wilcock, SVR press officer, said they believed the safe had been taken from Hanbury Cottage, where staff sign on, at about 7am.
He said: “They certainly would be dangerous if anybody tried to open them up.”
Sergeant Steven Fitzpatrick, who is investigating the theft, said it was likely whoever stole the safe may have believed there was money inside.
“These detonators can be activated by pressure or flame and could pose a serious risk to whoever might try and open the safe by force,” he said.
“They could also be a hazard to the general public if whoever stole them manages to get them out of the safe but then just dumps them somewhere.”
He urged anyone with information to contact police on 0300 333 3000.
“If anyone comes across such items, do not touch them, move away and contact police immediately.”
