Tyre blaze fumes prompt health meeting

Wem town councillors have been calling for a public meeting after they received letters and e-mails from residents regarding the blazes at Kingpin Tyres Ltd.

Officials from Shropshire Council, who are organising the meeting, say it will be held in the “coming weeks”.

The latest blaze in July involved about 20 to 30 tonnes of shredded rubber, but fire officials managed to bring it under control quickly because of expertise gained tackling two other fires at the same site in the previous 15 months.

Simon Forrester, who lives near the industrial estate, is now threatening to leave the town claiming he has suffered ill health since the latest fire.

Wem Town Councillor Peggy Carson said: “There has been a great deal of concern since the fire. I have received e-mails, letters and lots of people talking to me face-to-face.”

She added: “I know a doctor from Wales who has read the Shropshire Star regarding the fires who is very concerned about the health of people in Wem and wants to attend the public meeting.”

Simon Alton, Shropshire Council spokesman, said: “We are planning to arrange a public meeting in the coming weeks to update people on the discussions and works that have taken place between the council, partner organisations and the company.”

Officials from the Environment Agency, Health Protection Agency and Shropshire Council found no concern for public health after being called to monitor air quality during the fire in July.
