Police arrest man over Shrewsbury stabbing
Wednesday 8th September 2010, 12:10PM BST.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing that took place in Shrewsbury town centre’s Mardol.
Luke Rawlings, 22, of Armdale, Robertson Way, Shrewsbury, was attacked by three men in Mardol on August 29.
He was stabbed in the street outside Topcats bar at about 9.50pm while on a night out with a friend.
Officers attended a report of a street assault and found Mr Rawlings seriously injured with a stab wound close to the heart.
He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and later transferred to the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary in Stoke.
Today Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said that a man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of attempted murder. He was interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Investigations are continuing and police renewed their appeal for witnesses to come forward and call Shrewsbury CID on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Mr Rawling’s mother, Lynn, today said her son was still getting over his ordeal. She said she hoped police had caught the man who stabbed her son.
She said: “I hope they have got the right person before they do anyone else any more damage.
“Luke is a bit better than he was. He’s still in pain but it’s going to take a bit of time to get over.”
Meanwhile, police today said six people arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a Shrewsbury teenager was stabbed in a fight earlier this year, have had their bail extended as investigations continue.
Ryan Allis-Smith, 17, from Belle Vue, was stabbed twice in Castle Walk during an incident on May 18.
