Man dies days after Telford house fire
Wednesday 8th September 2010, 11:05AM BST.
A 62-year-old man who was carried unconscious from a burning house in Shropshire has died. The man was found inside his home after customers in the Red Lion pub in New Road, Telford, noticed smoke billowing from the windows on Sunday.
Workers at the pub raised the alarm at about 12.20pm and firefighters managed to pull the man – named as Valero Zapater – out of the house in Wrockwardine Wood.
He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford but died at about 10pm yesterday.
Steve Godfrey, crew manager at Wellington Fire Station, said 15 firefighters attended, along with an ambulance and police officers.
He said crews forced entry to the front and back of the house where they found Mr Zapater collapsed and unconscious in the downstairs lounge.
Detective Inspector Nick Haggitt, of Telford CID, said it was believed the fire was started by an electrical fault on a kitchen appliance.
Mr Haggitt said there were no suspicious circumstances.
Mr Zapater had lived alone at the house and an inquest is expected to be opened by coroner John Ellery later this week.
Barman David Howard said smoke could be seen coming out of the upstairs windows of the property.
He said he called the fire brigade after noticing the smoke.
Firefighters said the building was “choked with smoke” and the man was carried outside where paramedics treated him before he was taken to hospital.
