Oswestry anti-supermarket campaign to battle on
Monday 6th September 2010, 11:15AM BST.
Oswestry’s anti-supermarket campaigners today vowed to battle on after developers revealed they will appeal against a decision to reject their application.
A public meeting will be held tonight to draw up plans to fight the appeal by J Ross Development.
There will also be an information day, held by campaign group OS21, in the town’s Festival Square on Saturday from 10am until 2pm.
OS21 members hope residents will sign objection letters at the event.
Bosses from J Ross Development revealed last week they are appealing against the decision to refuse their plans for a store on Oswestry’s Central Car Park.
They want to build the store, along with other shops and a digital cinema. But in July a planning committee turned down the plans in an eight votes to two decision.
Expecting
Jessie Miller, secretary of the OS21 group said: “We are not surprised that they are appealing. We were expecting it and expecting for it to be done fairly quickly.
“The developers weren’t going to spend thousands and thousands of pounds and not give up.”
Miss Miller said a supermarket would be far too big for the area, cause traffic problems, and “suffocate the town”. She said: “We will be submitting objections.”
Tonight’s meeting will be with members of the Civic Society and Campaign to Protect Rural England Oswestry District from 7pm to 9pm at The Walls restaurant.
Opposition has also come from The Trinity Area Residents’ Association which represents about 300 households neighbour- ing the car park. Peter Lloyd, secretary, said the proposed road system is unsafe for a new supermarket and traffic would be directed through residential areas.
He said: “We must continue to oppose it.”
