Petrol bomb thrown at car in Telford
Saturday 4th September 2010, 10:23AM BST.
ARSONISTS HURLED a petrol bomb, damaging a car on a Shropshire driveway early today as the family slept just yards away in their home.
The attack is the latest in a series of suspected arson incidents which have blighted the Telford area in the last few weeks.
Police have already pledged to put “more attention” into parts of the borough following problems in the Brookside and Sutton Hill areas.
In the latest incident police were called to a home in Wyvern, Woodside, at about 1.30am today after the bomb, which consisted of a glass bottle filled with fuel, was thrown at a car.
The family was woken up by the noise of a dog barking after the item was thrown at the car on their driveway.
Tim Hughes, watch manager at Tweedale Fire Station, said the bottle was aimed at the car, but the fire quickly spread to a wheelie bin, just feet from the house.
“They threw the petrol bomb at the back of the car,” said Mr Hughes. Although they caused minor damage to the front driver’s side, the wheelie bin caught fire.
“The family woke up when they heard the next door neighbour’s dog barking and they came out of their house.”
Mark Hatton, force duty inspector for West Mercia Police, said officers attended the scene and were due to conduct house-to-house inquiries today.
It comes after firefighters were called out to the Brookside estate three times on Thursday to tackle rubbish fires started by youths. Police said they were working with Telford & Wrekin Council on the issue and warned such behaviour endangered lives and wasted emergency services resources.
Councillor Adrian Lawrence, the council’s cabinet member of environment, yesterday said it was “regrettable” incidents like the ones in Brookside happened.
Last Saturday arsonists sparked a string of fires on the Sutton Hill estate in Telford where there have been 38 fires since March.

By MORE ATTENTION i hope they don’t mean just an extra stroll through the centre of the estate before moving onto the next estate during the daytime like they usualy do.
night time is when things happen unless police are too scared to walk the beat.
by the way, sutton hill has been spated with arson attacks & vandalism to propperty for the last 4 years with little to no improvement.
i know, because i suffered it before moving to another estate as the police are useless & noone’s going to come forward to help when they know police acn’t protect them.

Night time is when they are very busy stopping harmless (sober!) motorists like me on some vague charge of ‘wandering a bit in the lane’ or some such nonsense. Much easier than chasing actual criminals.

Come on Steve, be fair. You can’t expect the police to waste their time on trivia like this when they can be gainfully employed catching real criminals like speeding motorists, drivers with one blown tail-light bulb etc.etc. Sadly mate I’m afraid that you will just have to put up with it because even if they caught these creatures the courts would only send them on holiday or tell them how naughty they are. I live on the island of Kefalonia in Greece and this sort of brain dead thing just does not happen and, strangely, the police are much more laid back here. I can’t see what they get out of these attacks, no profit, no gain so why do it?. Start dishing out 8 or 10 year stays in prison, that should send a message that even these zero IQ lowlifes could understand.

The police said a couple of days ago they were going to catch these arsonists. NOw we have another case of arson.
Where are the police? Not out patrolling the estates thats for sure.
Surely in a police force the size of West Mercia constabularly, should have a unit to deal with unsocial behavior wherever and whenever it occurs.
One other thing these individuals are buying petrol from a petrol station. I think I’m correct in saying most if not all petrol station have CCTV these days. maybe it’s about time the police strted looking at these CCTV vidoes

This is mortifying.
I hope a solution is reached sooner rather than later.

Best way to get the police to patrol problem areas at night? Drive a car with no tax disc, they’ll get half the force out and the helicopter.

THIS HAD BETTER BE STOPPED SOON ENOUGH PEOPLE KNOW WHO IS DOING THIS AND IT MAY NOT BE LONG BEFORE THE PUBLIC TAKE THE LAW INTO THEIR OWN HANDS. STUPID CHILDREN ARE GONNA END UP KILLING SOMEONE SOON!!!!!

…a series of suspected arson incidents which have blighted the Telford area in the last few weeks…
Er…No. Not quite Shropshire Star. A series of incidents in two small areas of Telford, which, with all due respect to the many decent people living there, are both known to have social ‘issues’.
I wonder, if these incidents had occurred in a run-down area of Shrewsbury, would the Star have said ‘which have blighted Shrewsbury over the last few weeks’? I think not.

Nothing worse than a defensive “Telf”

And nothing worse than a small-minded, bigoted nimby ‘Telford’s not really Shropshire’ type. I’m not from the area originally, but have lived here for more than 20 years.
Much as I like Shropshire I’m increasingly disappointed by some of the self-limiting people we have here with such a very narrow outlook on life and on their fellow human beings. Perhaps some of you need to get out a bit more?

Get the police out of the cars and walking around if they dare, we have to, maybe then they will have a chance of catching these arsonists, get them to concentrate on real crime not massarging figure by nicking a few motorists or petty criminals, for minor offences, get out of the cars and for gods sake walk round like the old bobbies used to. and nick the real villians before it gets more out of control.
The police have now lost it. Crime reduction or catching criminals, restore Law and order and do the job we pay you to do

A lot of the problems are also caused because of fly tipping and people leaving their recycling boxes all over Brookside, outside their properties due to lack of space in flats and houses.
It is time that Wrekin Housing and Telford and Wrekin both addressed these problems.

It’s about time we had more police. One for every house, no make that two because they’ll need to do shifts, who permanently hide in everyone’s wheelie bin just in case.
Of course the Bear Tax would go up to pay for the Bear Patrol, but let the Bears pay the Bear Tax, I pay the Homer Tax.

jeffb – although i agree with your sentiments, there are reasons that they go after these kind of people…..
Its called ‘Easy Money’ the fixed penalties that they enforce and dish out brings in their wages…..
Actually catching REAL Criminals means less revenue generated by spot fines, speeding fines, etc. It actually means that they have to SPEND money in sending the REAL Criminals to court and then possibly a custodial sentance!
Why do you think they now have so many CSO’s? cheap labour!!! and means that the real cops can sit on their fat behinds without lifting a finger!
Why do they get whats reffered to as ‘danger money’ when if you compare their role to that of a Firefighter who every time he/she attends a fire puts their life on the line for real….

Steve I am an ex firefighter with 26+ years opereational service, I can only agree with you nice comment,

STEVE.JEFFB. I have never had a fixed penalty ticket a fine or points on my licence in 50 years of driving cars, and 22 years HGV’s. But I totally agree with the contents of your letters.
