Police pledge over Telford arson attacks
Friday 3rd September 2010, 6:00PM BST.
Police are to target another Telford housing estate to clamp down on trouble following a string of arson attacks with “more attention” being given to the area.
Firefighters were called out to the Brookside estate three times last night to tackle rubbish fires started by youths.
The blazes come after arsonists last Saturday sparked a string of fires on the Sutton Hill estate in Telford where there have been 38 fires since March.
Police and firefighters from Tweedale fire station responded to last night’s calls, two of which were to the skatepark at the end of Beaconsfield, in the middle of the estate, where an abandoned sofa and a wheelie bin were set ablaze at about 8.45pm and again half an hour later.
The third call was to a pile of rubbish set on fire off Birchmore, Brookside, at about 11.30pm.
Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said more attention would now be given to the estate to prevent further trouble.
He said: “A sofa and bin left at the skatepark were targeted. Officers attended and when they did so youths at the scene scattered.
“There was no real danger from the fires but the council is now going along to remove that old sofa.
“There is also a camera on the gate to the skatepark and we will be examining that to see if we can identify who was responsible.
“We are working with the council on this issue. This behaviour could endanger others and it is also a waste of valuable time for the emergency services.”
Councillor Adrian Lawrence, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “It is regrettable that occasional incidents like this happen, caused by a minority.”
