Illegal Shropshire worker faces deportation over child porn
Friday 3rd September 2010, 3:00PM BST.
A man arrested on suspicion of working illegally following a raid on a Shropshire firm faces immediate deportation after he was also caught in possession of child porn.
UK Border Agency officers burst into Cheshire Game Supplies in Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, after a tip-off.
A 36-year-old Pakistani man was found to have overstayed his visa. Police officers later searching a caravan the man was living in found a large quantity of video tapes containing child porn classed at the most serious level.
A UK Border Agency spokesman said the man admitted possessing indecent images and was cautioned and placed on the sex offenders’ register.
He said the man was found to have overstayed his visa and had no permission to be in the UK.
The spokesman said steps would be taken to deport the man back to Pakistan.
Cheshire Game Supplies was also issued with an on-the-spot warning that it could be fined up to £10,000 for employing the illegal worker, unless bosses can prove they carried out the correct right-to-work checks, the spokesman said.
Immigration Minister Damian Green said: “The Government has tasked the UK Border Agency with carrying out an intense period of enforcement activity over the summer. We are determined to make it harder than ever for illegal immigrants to come to the UK.”
Adrian Gill, from the UK Border Agency’s West Mercia local immigration team, added: “There are strict rules about which foreign nationals can get a job in the UK and businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks.
“On this occasion, a serious sex offender conned his way into getting a job.”
Andrew Growcott, owner of Cheshire Game Supplies, said: “The guy in question had been working for us for three years. He had a national insurance number and we paid money into his bank account and paid his PAYE.
“What I don’t understand is if there was a problem why didn’t the Government notice a problem earlier?
“When they paid us a visit they took away his wage slips. The only thing we couldn’t find was a photocopy of his passport.
“We haven’t heard anything since.”
