Woman jailed for trying to smuggle drugs into HMP Shrewsbury
Friday 3rd September 2010, 7:00PM BST.
A 39-year-old woman who tried to sneak class A drugs into Shrewsbury’s Dana prison has been jailed for two years.
Deborah Weekes tried to give three wraps of cocaine and seven wraps of heroin to her partner, who was serving a prison sentence at the Dana in Castle Foregate.
But prison officers caught her with the drugs and she later admitted two charges of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply on March 18 this year.
At Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday she was sentenced to two years in prison on each charge, to run concurrently.
Mr Stephen Bacon, prosecuting, said Weekes, of Goldrill Avenue, Bolton, attended the prison at about 12.30pm to see her partner.
He said: “She was searched and nothing was found, she sat down at a visitor’s table. She then asked to use the visitors’ toilet and used a vending machine before returning to the table where her partner was.
“An officer saw that in her hand she had a packet of minstrel chocolates and a green wrapped package in her other hand. That was the package that contained the drugs. The visit was terminated and she was escorted away and arrested.”
The court heard the drugs were tested and confirmed to be 0.3g of cocaine and 0.8g of heroin, with a combined street value of between £48 and £55.
