Shropshire petrol attendant punched by fuel thieves
Thursday 2nd September 2010, 7:59PM BST.
An attendant was punched in the head when men in a lorry stole fuel from a Shropshire service station, police revealed today.
The man was attacked in Tong, near Shifnal, yesterday when he tried to raise the alarm using his mobile phone.
The thief tried to snatch the phone from the attendant and the lorry, thought to have been carrying at least one other man, sped off before police found it later abandoned.
West Mercia Police spokeswoman Maria Wilkinson said officers were called to Tong Service Station on the A41 after staff became suspicious of a blue curtain-sided HGV near the storage tanks between about 6pm and 6.20pm.
She said that when approached by a member of staff, one of the lorry’s occupants claimed to be delivering fuel.
The attendant began to call the police and was hit.
The lorry was found abandoned in a lay-by in Lizard Lane, Shifnal. The offenders are thought to have made off in a red Ford Focus car.
One of the men was described as white, about 5ft 7in tall and of muscular build. He had a shaven or bald head and wore a dark T-shirt, blue industrial trousers, black boots and a yellow, high-visibility jacket.
Another of the offenders was also described as white, about 5ft 11in tall and with very short or shaved hair. He wore a black T-shirt and army-style cargo bottoms.
