Woman’s body recovered from sea

A MAJOR AIR, sea and land search for missing Shropshire kayaker Elizabeth Ashbee has been called off after the body of a woman was found seven miles from where she went missing.

Coastguards said the body found in the sea off the Llyn Peninsula matched the description of the 53-year-old from Shrewsbury, who went missing on Sunday afternoon off the coast of Anglesey.

Ms Ashbee’s family were due to travel from Shropshire to formally identify the body this morning after coastguards said there were no other missing persons matching the description.

Shrewsbury Canoe Club, of which Ms Ashbee, of Ashley Street, Underdale, is a member, today released a statement on its website after a number of her friends assisted in the search.

It said: “Elizabeth was a real character within the club and will be missed by many.

Hostile

“We would like to express our sincerest thanks to the rescue services for all their time and efforts. Our thoughts and sympathy are with the family.”

Ms Ashbee’s four kayaking colleagues raised the alarm on Sunday night after they washed up on a “hostile” area of coastline.

Carl Hiltonen, duty watch manager for Holyhead Coastguard, confirmed that the search had been called off.

He said: “The body matches the description of the missing person and we have no other reports of missing people, so the search has been called off.

“The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.”
