Shropshire MoD workers in jobs march

More than 1,000 workers at the MoD in Donnington will down tools and take to the streets amid fears that jobs could be slashed by the Government, it was revealed today.

Civil servants at the base in Telford have called the potential cuts to jobs, compensation and pensions as “savage” and said they will fight back with a protest rally on Tuesday.

Chris Cadman, a trade union official with Unite, said workers fear there is a “big threat” to their jobs as the Government looks to make cuts across the board.

No decisions about where the cuts could happen have yet been made.

Mr Cadman said employees wanted to make their voices heard in a bid to prevent any cuts in funding and would march from the MoD base to Cordingley Hall in Donnington.

He said: “We have a big threat to all our jobs and the civil service compensation scheme, which affects people when they are made redundant.

“Pensions are also under review and the Tories are looking to make big cuts.

“These potential cuts are savage and when you are being hit from a lot of angles, such as your pension, it’s very close to people’s hearts.”

Once at the hall, workers will be addressed by Telford MP David Wright who said he will pledge his support to the campaign.

The government need to realise that people and their jobs are very important. These people will only end up on the dole, costing the government more money in the end.
My MP, Mark Pritchard before the election was very good at fighting for these people’s jobs. Where is he now??

Yes, Jayne, because the last government did so much for defence jobs in Shropshire. They exported many of them to Wales.
