Residents backing Craven Arms booze ban

More than 300 residents have thrown their support behind plans to introduce a booze ban in a south Shropshire town ahead of a crunch meeting tonight.

Police officers in Craven Arms want to be able to confiscate alcohol from people causing a nuisance in designated “no alcohol” areas.

Residents have signed petitions at local shops, cafes and community centres supporting the proposals.

The idea will be debated at tonight’s meeting of Craven Arms Town Council.

The proposal has been put forward after a number of incidents of vandalism and graffiti in areas including the railway station and on the town’s playing fields.

Clive Leworthy, chairman of Craven Arms Town Council, said he was aware that around 300 signatures had been collected. It is not yet known whether a blanket zone will be adopted for the whole town or whether a number of smaller zones will be introduced.

Arriva Trains Wales and Shropshire Council officers are already investigating plans to install CCTV at the town’s railway station.

Mr Leworthy said: “It would only mean that alcohol would be confiscated if people are causing a nuisance — it’s not going to stop people sitting on the picnic benches enjoying a glass of wine.

“There have been instances of graffiti and vandalism in areas like the playing fields, the Spar on Corvedale Road and at the railway station.

“I know around 300 signatures have been collected at the cafe by Harry Tuffins and a few pages full were filled in at the community centre too. People seem to be getting behind the idea.”

The meeting at Craven Arms Community Centre starts at 7.30pm, with Shropshire Council officials also expected to be in attendance.
