Police sting against travelling criminals

Gangs of criminals travelling into Shropshire were targeted in a huge police crackdown involving more than 70 officers.

The police sting took place at three sites on the A458, close to Bridgnorth, on Sunday, where officers forced dozens of drivers to pull over.

Vehicles were searched and several people were arrested for drug offences and driving without insurance. A man wanted in connection with an assault was also arrested.

Chief Inspector Sarah Chaloner, of Shrewsbury police, launched the operation after residents had raised issues at PACT – Police and Communities Together – meetings.

The crackdown saw officers target anti-social driving and criminal activity involving gangs travelling into the county from out of the area.Registered details of more than 1,500 vehicles were checked through the linked police and DVLA computer.

Action came following concerns that roads around Six Ashes, Wootton and Stanmore were being used by large groups travelling to the area from the West Midlands.

It was reported that their driving and behaviour were causing local people to feel unsafe.

Mrs Chaloner said the operation was a great success. “Collectively they wished to send out the message that they will not tolerate those who come to engage in criminal activity or disrupt our communities,” she said. “I have been delighted by the positive response we have received from residents and for all the support we have been given from local licensees and businesses.

“The success of this operation is down to the enduring sense of community spirit.

“I should also add that I am proud that we have such dedicated staff who without complaint have given up their bank holiday weekend to support this operation.”

There seems to be a problem with gangs from the West Midlands in that area (Wootton /Six Ashes)
I’ve seen all sorts of reports about car jacking, firerams offences , dangerous driving (crashed Lamborghinis!) etc

Any idea what’s attracting them to this corner of rural Shropshire ?
