Hunt resumes for Shrewsbury kayaker Elizabeth Ashbee
Tuesday 31st August 2010, 3:00PM BST.
COASTGUARDS CARRYING out a major land, sea and air search for missing Shropshire woman Elizabeth Ashbee today recovered a kayak about 30 miles from where she was last seen.
Search teams said the boat – found at Morfa Nefyn, near Pwllheli, this morning – matched the description of the one used by the 53-year-old from Shrewsbury.
Ms Ashbee vanished at about 2.30pm on Sunday off the coast of Anglesey in North Wales.
But coastguards said the discovery did not rule out the possibility of Ms Ashbee being found alive.
Jim Paton, manager for Holyhead Coastguard, said: “We have got coastguard rescue teams along the coast, more or less from Anglesey to the Llyn Peninsular searching the coastline.
“We have located a kayak similar to the one that was being used by the missing person and that was located at Morfa Nefyn, which is about 30 odd miles from where she was last seen.”
Mr Paton added: “We know the lady was wearing a buoyancy aid and a dry suit and the sea temperature is still relatively warm. We haven’t given up the search at all. While she’s still in the water there’s a chance she’s still alive.”
Mr Paton said two lifeboats were due to be despatched to search for the Shrewsbury Canoe Club member, while there was also a possibility the helicopter could be mobilised again today for an air search.
Paul Ebrey, chairman of the canoe club, today said some members had travelled to Anglesey to help coastguards in the search.
A neighbour of Ms Ashbee, who lives in Ashley Street, Underdale, today said: “She’s fantastic and a really nice lady. She goes regularly kayaking and you often see her loading her stuff up.”
