Arrest made over Telford arson attacks

Detectives investigating a string of arson attacks within four hours of each other on a Telford estate have arrested a man, police said today.

The arrest followed five attacks in the early hours of Saturday in which a camper van, a car and caravan in Sutton Hill were all gutted.

A man had a lucky escape when his camper van was set ablaze as he slept inside.

Ron Hyde, from Cornwall, who was in Telford on Saturday to visit his terminally ill wife at the Princess Royal Hospital, managed to douse the flames and escape in the drama in Summerhill.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds today said a man had been arrested in connection with the arson attacks on Saturday and had been bailed pending further inquiries.

Another of the victims on Saturday was 57-year-old Geoff Crane whose caravan was gutted outside his home in Selbourne.

Mr Crane said the number of arson attacks and incidents of crime on the Sutton Hill estate were out of control and has called for the authorities to take action.

A car was also burnt out in Summerhill.

There have been 38 fires in the area since March.

Acting Detective Inspector Mark Bellamy of Telford CID said the situation in Sutton Hill was a high priority for officers and they were doing everything they could to catch the perpetrators.
