Travellers up and down the country hoping to beat bank holiday queues by leaving early today have found themselves caught in the worst of the congestion.

Motoring experts advised people heading off on long weekend breaks to leave after lunch, as heavy traffic began to build up on major routes yesterday afternoon.

Graham Smith, of AA Roadwatch, said: “We will probably have a morning rush, so after 12pm is probably the best time to set off.”

This weekend is traditionally one of the busiest of the year with some 16 million cars expected on the roads.

Today, those who already braved the roads were soaking up the atmosphere at music festivals in Reading and Leeds – complete with wellies and waterproofs.

Locally, organisers of the Shrewsbury Folk Festival are hoping for record-breaking crowds after thousands of people packed into the town’s West Midlands Showground for the opening day.

Opening acts – including comedian and musician Adrian Edmondson – helped to get the crowds rocking yesterday.

The festival is just one of a number of events across the region.

Others include the two-day Ludlow Green Festival, Ellesmere Carnival and the County of Salop Steam Engine Rally in Shrewsbury.
