Auction hell as hundreds of bidders block roads
Thursday 26th August 2010, 10:46AM BST.
An auction organised to sell the assets of a Mid Wales firm which went out of business was called off after hundreds of people wanting to bid for items blocked a main road.
Dyfed-Powys Police officers were called to manage the traffic chaos after hundreds more people than were expected flocked to the auction at Jones & Co, Guilsfield, near Welshpool.
The company ceased trading earlier this month with the loss of 20 jobs.
The business specialised in timber, agricultural supplies and the construction of agricultural buildings.
As well as a base in Guilsfield at Hendre Hen, the company also had bases in Welshpool and Caersws, near Newtown.
A spokeswoman for receivers Pricewaterhouse Coopers confirmed it was dealing with the closure but was unable to comment any further earlier today.
Cars were backed up a mile in either direction, stretching back to the main Llanfyllin-Welshpool road close to Harding’s Garage & Garden Centre.
One motorist said: “I was left sat in my car for half an hour as I waited for the police to clear the scene.”
She said it was “mayhem” and there were hundreds and hundreds of people.
PricewaterhouseCoopers appointed auctioneers Butters John Bee to handle yesterday’s auction. It will now be rescheduled.
Sian George, Dyfed Powys Police spokeswoman, said: “We were called to the scene to help manage traffic flow after more people than expected attended an event in the area.”
Councillor Alan Crowe, town council member, said: “It is very sad to see a company like that go out of business because they are a really good local company.”
