Thousands flock in for period fun

Wednesday 25th August 2010, 8:49AM BST.

Thousands of people from across the country have flocked to a Mid Wales town which has turned back the clock 200 years.

Llandrindod Wells has been transformed back to its Victorian heyday for its annual summer festival, which sees locals and people from across the country dress up in costumes from the 1800′s.

The nine-day event, which runs until Sunday, kicked off with a visit from “Queen Victoria” herself.

Every year, townspeople and holiday-makers promenade in period costumes, soaking up the atmosphere, marvelling at the street entertainers, entering competitions and attending events.

Organisers are hoping this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever before.

The festival aims to provide fun for all the family and cater for all ages and tastes.

At the end of the nine days, the proceedings are closed with a torchlight procession and fireworks display over The Lake.

A spokeswoman said: “Main highlights will include a Victorian fashion show, a performance by Talgarth Male Voice Choir, a grand ball, band night, a grand costume display, a children’s fancy dress parade and party and much more.

“There is still time to take a trip down memory lane, and rekindle those feelings of nostalgia with our many entertainers.

“Watch the spectacle of the Victorian Costume Parades and best dressed competitions.

“Men, here’s your chance to heckle the ladies as they surge on Middleton Street as Suffragettes this Sunday at 4pm.
