Raiders kick down doors in Telford nursery burglary

Intruders kicked down doors and left paper strewn over an office in a raid on a Telford nursery, discovered by a member of staff turning up for work.

The Abacus Day Nursery, in the former Ketley Bank community centre in Main Road, was locked up by a cleaner about 8pm on Monday night. The raid was discoverd yesterday.

Police said the burglars had forced open the front door with a crowbar before searching the nursery and forcing open a hatch into a locked office, where they stole about £140 from a desk drawer.

Hayley Loveitt, pre-school supervisor at the nursery, said staff were angry about what had happened. One of our nursery nurses noticed that the office had been broken into. There was damage to the doors where they had come through.

“They had damaged filing cabinet doors and kicked down other doors in the nursery trying to get through. In the office there was paper everywhere.”

She said: “It has shook us all up. To think that somebody has come into a nursery where children are.”

In a separate incident, burglars forced open patio doors at the Maddocks Social Club in Church Street Oakengates between 1.30am and 2am today.

The premises were locked and secured at 11.40pm on Tuesday night and, according to the alarm company which looks after the premises, the alarm went off at the club at 1.40am.

Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “Having forced open the patio doors and entered the premises it appears the thieves headed straight for the fruit machines and attempted to break into them.”
