Police seek witnesses over Machynlleth bank robbery bid
Wednesday 25th August 2010, 11:22AM BST.
Police in Powys have appealed for witnesses to come forward to help them trace a man after an attempted bank robbery in a Mid Wales town.
A man wearing a scarf around his face and dark clothing demanded cash from staff at Natwest in Maengwyn Street, Machynlleth on Monday.
He left emptyhanded and no-one was injured after staff called for assistance, police said today.
Dyfed-Powys Police said a full investigation had been launched into the incident and added no weapon has been used.
Detective Inspector Ian Andrews of Dyfed-Powys Police said the man had walked into the bank just before 1pm on Monday.
“A man entered the bank, demanded cash and was threatening towards staff. No one was injured, no weapon was used, and the man left emptyhanded after staff called for assistance. Staff were shaken and alarmed after the incident but unhurt, ” he said.
The man is described as being in his late teens to early 20s. He was about 6 foot tall and of thin build. He had dark hair and dark eyes and possibly a stubble of growth on his chin.
He wore a grey scarf around his face, blue jeans and a dark coloured hoodie. He is described as having an English accent.
“There is a potential that the man was a visitor to the area and may have arranged accommodation locally,” added Mr Andrews.
“Owners of campsites, bed and breakfast establishments or similar should consider the description and contact police with any relevant information.”
He appealed to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident to call the police.
Anyone with information should call Dyfed-Powys Police on 101 or 0854 3302000.
