Bridge fall man seriously injured

A man suffered serious injuries when he fell from Llangollen’s River Dee bridge last night.

Emergency services were called to the historic bridge over the River Dee by worried passers-by. It is thought the man was threatening to jump onto rocks below.

Specialist police trained negotiators went to the tourist town and roads in the centre were closed off.

A spokesman for North Wales police said officers received a call to the bridge on Castle Street, before 8pm, after reports of a man in a distressed situation.

“A number of police officers, including trained negotiators, attended,” she said.

Firefighters from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service also went to the scene.

Negotiations began with the distressed man.

But the police spokesman said: “During dialogue the man entered the water.

“He was immediately recovered by the emergency services.”

The man was taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries.

A spokesman said “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to call the Police / Fire Service joint control room quoting incident reference number L157814.”

The number to call is 0845 607 1002.

Police said today said the man was in a stable condition this morning.
