Welshpool service station is due to close

Monday 23rd August 2010, 11:28AM BST.

A Mid Wales garage and service station will close this year, it has been revealed.

Quarry Service Station, based in Brook Street, Welshpool, has announced it will be closing with immediate effect on October 31.

It is not known if any jobs will be affected.

A letter to customers placed on the door of the business said the decision to close would affect both the petrol station and the garage, which are both run under the Quarry Service Station name.

The letter says the decision has been made due to “time catching up with the owners and the equipment”.

Councillor Alan Crowe, from Welshpool, said it was disappointing news

“It’s very sad to hear that the garage is closing and I really hope that someone could take it over and keep it going,” he said.

“We don’t like to see any businesses in the area close but at the moment it’s becoming an all too common sight and is definitely a sign of the times.”

Councillor Crowe said he hoped other businesses would not follow suit.

He said: “We have a lot of positive things arriving in Welshpool within the next few months, including the Tesco superstore, businesses shouldn’t see it as a bad thing but instead see it as good, because it will help attract more people into the area.”

Welshpool town clerk Robert Robinson said he had been told that the garage was closing.
