Newtown safety fears over road’s surface fault
Monday 23rd August 2010, 11:28AM BST.
Motorists could be seriously injured by a dip which has formed in a road in a Mid Wales housing estate, it was claimed today.
The road has begun dipping in Vaynor, one of the biggest estates in Newtown, the town’s mayor said today.
Councillor Joy Jones said she noticed the dip, which was starting to turn into a hole, at the weekend and she was worried someone could get hurt.
She said: “There is a hole forming from a dip in the road in Vaynor and I am worried that someone such as a motorcyclist could miss seeing it, hit it and come off their bike.
“There is also a man who drives a three wheeled car and I am worried it could cause his vehicle to lose balance.
“It wasn’t very big, but it does seem to be growing and I am just concerned for people’s safety because you could miss it.”
Councillor Jones said the dip was in a similar location to where a water mains pipe burst last month leaving up to 600 properties without water.
Severn Trent said at the time that a six inch mains pipe on the estate had been affected and bottles of water were handed out to residents on the estate.
Lee Evans, a spokesman for Powys County Council, said the dip had been reported to the council and had been marked for work to be carried out.
