Powys substation planned to cope with windfarm power
Friday 20th August 2010, 9:09AM BST.
A substation the size of 13 football pitches could be built in Powys to help cope with the number of future windfarms expected across the county in the next few years, it has emerged.
Bosses at National Grid said today that they were looking at possible sites for the substation but insisted no decisions would be made until after a public consultation in October.
Sara Wilcox, communications officer for National Grid, said people would be given a chance to have their say on plans.
She said: “A number of new wind farms are being considered for Mid Wales. National Grid is carrying out studies to identify how we can connect these wind farms to the national electricity transmission network and as part of this we are considering where an electricity substation could be sited.
“The project is still in its early stages and as the studies are still under way we are not yet able to confirm which site options could potentially be taken forward. However, a key part of National Grid’s approach is to seek the views of local people. We are aiming to launch a public consultation in October, when we will be encouraging people to have their say.”
But Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies said it would be “no ordinary” development.
He said: “In a few weeks time National Grid will announce the site of its Mid Wales substation. This will be no ordinary development. The substation will be 350 metres by 250 metres in size. That’s about 20 acres — or about 13 football pitches.
“We were expecting to be told where this substation is to be built six months ago, but National Grid inform me that a site has been difficult to identify. I’m not surprised.”
