Men hid inside Shrewsbury pub to attack and rob landlord
Friday 20th August 2010, 1:35PM BST.
Two men hid inside a Shrewsbury pub before mounting an attack on its landlord and forcing him to hand over around £2,000 in cash from the safe.
Landlord Danny Price today said he was shaken but uninjured by the robbery at the Red Lion in Battlefield Road before midnight yesterday.
Police today appealed for information to trace the robbers and said it was thought the men hid in the premises, waiting for customers to leave, before springing on the unsuspecting landlord.
Mr Price said: “I had just finished locking up and I had switched everything off in the front of the pub. I took out the till and walked towards the back of the pub, near the toilets, to go upstairs to the office.
“It was very dark but two men suddenly appeared at the foot of the stairs and told me to open the safe.
“One man grabbed me by the wrist and my first thought was to get upstairs and hand over the money.
“They followed me upstairs to the office. They took all the notes from the safe but left the change behind before making their getaway through the back door.
“Around £2,000 was taken. I am still shaken up and the incident has left me feeling awful. I didn’t get a good look at them but I believe one man was around 5ft 7ins and the other man around 6ft tall.”
Police carried out an immediate search of the area and inquiries were continuing today. Constable Mark Wilding, the investigating officer, said: “We are appealing for any information which might assist the investigation. At the moment, we are not sure if they were on foot or had a vehicle nearby.
“If anyone saw anything suspicious I urge them to contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 3333000.
