Meetings in Whitchurch and Wem over parking charges
Friday 20th August 2010, 8:30AM BST.
North Shropshire residents are being urged to have their say on controversial plans to introduce parking charges in their towns.
Public meetings have been called in Whitchurch and Wem over the draft parking strategy that has been unveiled by Shropshire Council.
Residents in Whitchurch fear the proposals could kill the town centre claiming shops are already struggling in the current economic climate.
Shropshire Council wants to introduce fees to provide a consistent approach to parking across the county.
The meeting in Whitchurch will be held on September 8 at 7pm in the Civic Centre.
Shropshire councillor for Whitchurch South, Gerald Dakin, said: “We would like as many members of the public as possible to attend.”
Wem Town Council and Wem Rural Parish Council have also joined forces to hold a public meeting which will take place at Edinburgh House, Wem, on September 9 at 6.30pm.

Market Drayton has had parking charges for some time now, and they have recently gone up! Come & see our High Street which is full of empty properties, quite depressing as you go through. I believe there is also talk of imposing charges on another, currently free, car park. Why should we be the only small market town in this area to have to pay to park? It cannot encourage trade into the town.

Tesco,Morrisons etc will be rubbing their hands with glee, their free parking is waiting to welcome ex whitchurch/wem shoppers.
The lovely market towns of Shropshire and their small shops are not only a convenience but also a TOURIST attraction.Who wants to take a day out just to see the same huge chain stores found anywhere in the cloned main centres of Shropshire.
Still a few bob in the pockets of SCC is obviously more important than the countys heritage.
