Shrewsbury’s Netto may become little Asda near to bigger Asda
Thursday 19th August 2010, 9:40AM BST.
Shrewsbury’s Netto supermarket could be turned into an Asda store just metres from Asda’s existing site in the town, it was revealed today. Asda is owned by US giant Walmart.
It snapped up Netto’s UK operation in a £778 million takeover in May and the move will add another 193 stores to its estate, all of which will be renamed under the Asda brand by mid-2011.
Bosses have now received Building Control approval from Shropshire Council to carry out internal alterations and fit out works at the Netto site in Abbey Foregate to form an Asda store.
The new small store would be just metres from the Asda store in Old Potts Way.
However, Asda still needs approval from the Office of Fair Trading for its takeover of Netto’s UK arm before work can take place.
Nobody was available for comment today from Asda or Netto – which opened its store in Shrewsbury in 2002.
The Netto acquisition is expected to boost Asda’s smaller format portfolio and help it become an even stronger competitor to closest rival and market leader Tesco.

What a massive shame.
Nettos is a great low cost discount store with nice staff and it was much better having more choice.
Asda and Tescos are like giant amoebas going aound swallowing up the competition.

I think this is absolutely stupid turning netto into another asda when there is one next door, why not keep netto as it is because it is a really good store

No problems with ASDA taking over Netto. I love Netto for it’s cheap products but I ALWAYS end up going elsewhere for particular things – and thats just a faff.So I now shop at ASDA.
I can’t see the need/reason behind having a smaller store only a few 100 metres away. They’d be better off just selling the building on for another purpose.

According “The Times” and “The Grocer”, ASDA have been given clearance to buy Netto, but they must sell on at least 30 or its stores. It is understood that Morrisons are discussing buying some of the stores to be sold. This may include Shrewsbury or Donnington Nettos. This should become clearer when OFT publishes its report.
