These wacky vegetables grown by Shropshire pensioner Fred Coxill look more like a teddy bear and a jelly baby than two potatoes.

Fred, 84, dug up the spuds from his back garden in Wellington, Telford.

He said one looked distinctly like a teddy bear and the other had more than a passing resemblance to a jelly baby – and a green one at that.

Gardening is Fred’s passion and he has spent most of his working life in the agricultural world. But his mutant spuds have left him baffled.

His step-daughter Margaret Brown said: “Fred worked on farms in his early days and then worked at the sugar beet factory at Allscott. He loves his garden and always keeps it immaculate.

“He has grown veg out there for many years but he’s never seen anything like these two before.”

The teddy bear-shaped potato was dug up last Sunday but the jelly baby spud came out of the ground six weeks ago, the reason for it going green at the gills. Fred’s freak finds are the latest examples of Frankenstein food to come to light in Shropshire.

The Shropshire Star has highlighted other weird finds such as carrot which looked like a hand – and went on to be the centre of attention on a Japanese website.
