Visitor centre is planned for town

A new visitor centre could be built in Telford Town Park as part of the multi-million pound Southwater development.

Bosses at Telford & Wrekin Council want to put the single-storey building at the park in Hinkshay Road, Malinslee.

There are currently visitor facilities at Spout Farm House, which council bosses plan to demolish if the plans are approved.

Members of the council’s plans board are being recommended to grant permission for the development.

A report to the meeting says: “The existing centre is proposed for demolition to facilitate the new Southwater redevelopment scheme.

“The new building is part of a wider project within the town park for improvements to facilities and attractions.”

It said the building would comprise of toilets and baby changing facilities, an information desk, a cafe/refreshments area, staff room and office. A second phase is planned, providing an educational space and bike hire.

The report says: “The visitor centre is appropriately located with regards to the amenities within the park and within close proximity to the town centre. It can be accessed through a variety of modes of transport.”

The report adds: “The community function of the building are complementary to the aims and function of the green network in this location.”
