Morda woodland to be transformed

Tuesday 17th August 2010, 7:19AM BST.

A woodland near Oswestry, which was once a haunt for teenagers, is to be transformed for all age groups to enjoy. Morda residents are being called on to form a group to help carry out the work.

Shaun Burkey, Shropshire Council’s countryside and community officer, is calling for people to attend a meeting on Thursday from 6.30pm to find out more.

There will also be discussions at the meeting at Morda Village Hall on how to best manage Glentworth Woods in the long-term.

Glentworth Woods was previously riddled with BMX tracks and ramps but Mr Burkey said they had been removed after it had become “too popular” with youngsters. Now it is hoped the local community can help transform it into an area for everyone

Mr Burkey said: “Now we have cleared the ramps out of the wood there is a new opportunity for us to look at all the public open spaces and see how to manage the wood in the future.

“I think the best way of doing that is to get the local community involved.”

Mr Burkey said he had already spoken to some residents about transforming the area.

“People clearly wanted the wood as a natural habitat. Bring in some wildlife and have a healthy woodland rather than a neglect one. It needs a long-term usage plan,” he said.

“There could be some brick steps and footpaths making it a more pleasant experience.”

He said the money for the project could potentially come from the council’s maintenance budget. He also said if a group was set up there could be easier access to grant funding.

But he added:”The main reason for the group is to give the ownership to the people of Morda.”

Why cant some people leave well alone?

The local youngsters had spent hours building and digging out the ramps, and were doing no harm to anyone.

Now its all been levelled with the expectation that the people of Glentworth will turn it into some sort of woodland paradise!
