Shrewsbury Flower Show a success despite the rain

Crowds in the rain at the Shrewsbury Flower Show on Saturday

It might have been one of the driest starts to the year for eight decades but there was certainly no shortage of water at the 2010 Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Thousands of people braved the conditions at the two-day floral extravaganza, but spirits were kept high with millions of blooms on display, spectacular fireworks and an action-packed programme of arena events.

Lieutenant Colonel Mike Carver, chairman of the Shropshire Horticultural Society, said that despite the rain, the show was a success.

He said a typical British “stiff upper lip” approach was taken with the weather.

“We are delighted with the success of this year’s show,” he said.

“There was a lot of rain, but despite the weather, a large number of people came and supported the event.

“From early indications the number of people who attended was higher than last year. I would like to thank all the committee members who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this year’s show.”

About 60,000 people are estimated to have descended on the Quarry showground.

David Battisby, marketing chairman of the society, said: “Highlights included the Hairy Bikers and the Household Cavalry and we hope they appealed to the younger audience.

“The fireworks were equally impressive.”

May have been a success for the profit margin but not for paying public. After attending for last 5 years I felt this show was disappointing and expensive. Maybe the show needs a rethink for the non-members who seemed to have been catered for more than ever. A real shame.
