Dozens of people turned out for a memorial walk in aid of a Mid Wales soldier who was killed in Iraq, raising more than £1,000 for good causes.
Corporal Paul Thomas, 29, of Buttington, near Welshpool, died in Basra on August 17, 2004.
A memorial walk was held yesterday to mark the sixth anniversary of his death, with 70 people taking part.
Alan Crowe, event spokesman, said he was delighted that so many people turned out to honour Corporal Thomas.
He said: “We had about 60 adult walkers and 10 children and so far more than £1,100 has been raised with plenty more to come in from the website and other channels.
“The weather was absolutely scorching – too hot to walk really – but I hope that Corporal Thomas’ family think it was a fitting tribute and the money will be split between the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Help For Heroes.”
He added: “For those people who would like to make a contribution to the fund, but were unable to do the walk, they can now make a donation online at www.justgiving.com/
Earlier this year, a memorial stone and plaque honouring Corporal Thomas was placed in the town’s memorial garden in Howell Drive.
He was a member of 2nd Battalion The Light Infantry but was attached to the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment when he died.
He was laid to rest with full military honours in September 2004.
