The sister of a teenager whose body was found in a Shropshire shed almost 20 years ago today said she was convinced the tragedy was no accident.

Liam Wright, who lived in Brookside, Telford, died in a mysterious fire next to Madeley Ski Slope on September 10, 1990.

An inquest the following year recorded an open verdict, leaving his family none the wiser about how the19-year-old died.

But events took a dramatic turn last month when police reopened the case and arrested a man in his late 30s on suspicion of murder.

Detective Inspector Paul Knight, of West Mercia Police’s major incident unit in Stourport, said the man was released on police bail without charge on Tuesday.

An anonymous letter was sent to detectives and a number of new leads are now being followed up. Mr Knight said police were particularly keen to speak to the author of the letter.

He said the investigation into any suspicious death was never closed and, even given the passage of time, detectives would continue to examine the events of the night Liam died in an effort to find the truth about what happened.

Liam’s only sibling is sister Deborah Mason who is now aged 46 and lives in Warwickshire.

Speaking exclusively to the Shropshire Star, she said the latest twist in her brother’s story had offered her and her mother a glimmer of hope that the truth would eventually be revealed.

She said: “I have always been convinced someone, somewhere knows what happened that night. Whatever happened it didn’t happen by accident.

“If we can get to the bottom of this it will at last mean closure.

“The last 20 years have been absolutely horrendous. I have been trying to get the case back in the public domain without success. I wanted Crimewatch to highlight Liam’s death but they said they couldn’t without fresh evidence.”

Mrs Mason said the tragedy and its aftermath had taken a terrible toll on her mother, Faith Wright, who had also lost her husband in the intervening years.

Mrs Wright and her husband, Eddie, moved to Spain after he retired and they had three years out there before he suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 66 in 2003.

Mrs Mason said: “I just want to appeal to people to come forward with any information which will be of help to the police but I don’t want cranks getting in on the act and wasting time and causing more upset.”
