No hope on horizon for UK sunworshippers

Sunworshippers were offered little chance of a return to the blazing temperatures seen at the start of the summer, with forecasters giving a bleak outlook for the next week.

Heavy rain is expected across the whole of England and Wales today, although Scotland and Northern Ireland should be mainly dry.

Tomorrow is expected to produce the best weather of the next few days, with sunny spells interspersed with light showers across the whole of the UK.

But Gareth Harvey, forecaster with MeteoGroup, said more heavy rain is expected to fall next week and the mercury will struggle to get into the 20s.

He said: “Tomorrow evening there’s a depression coming off the continent. It looks like it’s going to bring heavy rain, particularly to the south east. It’s going to be pretty steady throughout Monday, so a really miserable start to the working week in the south-east. The rest of the country will be drier with a fair amount of sunshine.”

By Monday night more wet weather will drench the other side of the country, with a large Atlantic depression bringing heavy rain over the West Country and spreading eastwards on Tuesday. He added: “There’s certainly nothing summery coming up in the foreseeable future,” he added.

Met Office forecaster Rebekah Sherwin said heavy rain over the next few days could result in some areas being flooded.
