Body pulled from River Severn

A body has been recovered from the River Severn in Shrewsbury by specialist teams searching for a man who disappeared after a night out in the town.

Rescue teams found the body of a man along a stretch of the river in the town yesterday afternoon.

The searches were being carried out as part of a police investigation into the disappearance of Joshua Wreford, who had not been seen following a night out in the town on Wednesday.

Police today confirmed the body had been found by teams searching for Mr Wreford but the body had not been identified, and an investigation into his disappearance remained “ongoing”.

Maria Wilkinson, a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “Police were alerted by the Severn Area Rescue Association at about 3.40pm yesterday that a body had been discovered in the River Severn, not far from the English Bridge.”

She added that Mr John Ellery, Coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, has been informed of the find.

Yesterday afternoon a marked police car was parked on the roadside near to where the body was pulled from the river.

Mr Wreford had left The Source Vodka Bar at about 10.30pm on Wednesday and was last seen in Barker Street at about 11.30pm.

When he had not returned home by Thursday afternoon, he was reported missing to police and an investigation was launched.

Yesterday police launched an appeal to find the 24-year-old, from Radbrook.

Officers said it was possible that he was in the Victoria Quay area shortly after midnight.

So far more than 2,000 people have joined a Facebook group, launched to raise awareness of Mr Wreford’s disappearance.
