Telford & Wrekin Council cameras in line for cuts
Wednesday 11th August 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Finance chiefs at Telford & Wrekin Council have revealed they are considering slashing funding for speed cameras – a move which could see fixed cameras in the borough switched off to cut costs.
Hard-hitting proposals to cope with the loss of more than £3 million in government funding were presented to members of the council’s ruling Tory cabinet at a meeting last night.
Free swimming for youngsters aged six to 16 at borough leisure centres is to be scrapped at the end of the school summer holidays, along with advisory support services for schools.
Nearly £500,000 of funding for the pilot Find Your Talent programme – offering youngsters in Telford the chance to get involved in dance, drama and music – has also been pulled.
Councillor Sean Kelly, presenting the report, said tough decisions had to be made.
He said: “It is very unfortunate obvious- ly that some services will draw to a close, for instance free swimming and the end of advisory support services for schools.
“We are also looking at our position with the Road Safety Partnership and we could possibly see a reduction in speed cameras, which as far as I am concerned would be no bad thing.”
