Burns shock as workmen slice Telford cable

Two workmen in Shropshire suffered facial burns after slicing through an 11,000 volt cable with a jackhammer.

The men, one in his forties and the other in his fifties, were digging at an empty premises on Halesfield Industrial Estate in Telford yesterday when they struck the cable, suffering an electric shock.

The pair suffered burns to their hands, arms and face and were airlifted to the specialist burns unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

The incident happened just after 11.30am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said two air ambulances, one from Cosford and one from Strensham, attended along with an ambulance crew and two rapid response cars.

He said: “It is understood the two workmen were digging into the ground when they both suffered burns.

“Both had facial burns. Between them, they also had burns to their arms and hands. Their injuries were treated and they were given pain relief at the scene.

“With the attending crews recognising the need to quickly take the patients to the right place for the right treatment, both men were flown by the two helicopters to the specialist burns unit.

Central Networks spokesman Jonathan Smith said: The cable they struck would have carried about 11,000 volts.”
