Shrewsbury seeing more cyclists

More people are getting on their bikes and cycling in Shropshire’s county town.

The number of people on various cycle routes around Shrewsbury, during the spring months from April to June, showed an 11 per cent increase between 2009 and 2010.

The figure comes from an initial report on the first year of Shropshire Council’s Cycle Shrewsbury campaign.

Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “We’re very pleased to have these figures.

“We’ve certainly noticed that more people are getting involved in our events and activities, and it’s good to see that cycling is getting more popular all across the town.

“It shows that there is a demand for what our Cycle Shrewsbury campaign is doing – providing practical information and encouragement to help people choose cycling for their local journeys and for leisure.”

He added in response they would be reprinting the Shrewsbury Walking and Cycling map. He said: “The new edition will show all the latest improvements to Shrewsbury’s walking and cycling routes and will be available from the Shrewsbury Town Council stall at the Flower Show, the council’s Cycle Shrewsbury stall at the Street Theatre Festival, as well as from libraries, council offices and from our website.”

Research carried out at the annual Shrewsbury Bike Fest in June showed that nine out of 10 people questioned now cycle more than they did a year ago.

Councillor Taylor-Smith said a programme of rides just for female cyclists has also proved successful in helping women start cycling again, with numbers increasing steadily over the past six months.

Cycling England, an independent body that aims to get people cycling more safely, more often, designated Shrewsbury and 16 other towns as “Cycling Towns”.

The project aims to create a change in cycling levels. Through the Cycling City and Towns programme, more than 2.5 million adults and children will benefit from levels of investment equivalent to the best European cycling cities.

if you go into ‘www.cycleshrewsbury.com’, Mozilla Firefox says don’t trust the website!
What I wanted to say was we need a good route through town from Porthill at least to Coton Hill/ bottom of Ellesmere road, if not the top of Ellesmere road. It’s quite offputting for those on the south west of town to get to Harmer Hill and points north.

    great news

    well done to them

shows you dont really need a 100million by pass after all, “soft” measures work for a fraction of the price!

I’ve just cycled from Land’s end to John O’Groats. The lack of cycle lanes in around Shrewsbury became very obvious as the trip progressed. I travelled almost exclusively on cycle lanes some days in Scotland. The provision in and around Shrewsbury is poor.

What a coincidence, I was going to do that last weekend. But there was something good on telly that I didn’t want to miss so I didn’t bother.

      Maybe next weekend.

All we need now is more places to lock your bike up and leave it. Currently in town centre there are no where near enough cycle stands and it surprises me that there is not. The square is the centre of the town and all we have are a few under the old court building, we need more stands maybe down the sides of the square where they are in full view of the public and not hidden away.

An increase is good news, but there is still an awfully long way to go. Andy Wood points out what residents already know – cyclepath provision is woefully small, piecemeal and invariably tokenistic. Unless the roads get safer (i.e. drivers are more considerate) and more routes become acceptable for anyone but the brave, the increase will sadly tail off.

There is massive potential to improve Shrewsbury by cutting car use and getting more of us to ride, walk and so on. However, until the potential riders aren’t so frightened of riding into and around the town because of fear of traffic (and I’ve met so many people who say this) there’s only a limited amount that can be done.

Re. parking there was a cyclehoop trial in the Square, I wonder if that will eventually bring more parking provision. The walking & cycling map (PDF via http://bit.ly/bb2qoa) shows cycle parking locations, including two in the Square, on Pride Hill, outside the Wheatsheaf on High Street, Shoplatch, Castle Street, St Mary’s Place… The anticipated revamp of the West End is due to bring additional cycle parking spaces too.

I regularly cycle a number of routes in and around Shrewsbury. The provision of cycle paths is welcome, however far too often they are only placed alongside major roads such as the inner ring road. it is also impossible to do a loop of Shrewsbury without some part of the route involving heavy traffic (Ellesmere Road for example). Far too often cycle paths are not linked and come to a sudden end. Since the start of the cycle scheme, some paths have been revamped but there is very little evidence of new or extended cycle routes. Little maintenance of routes appears to take place such as tree cutting or weed spraying and far too often I see pedestrians using the cyle route as an extension of the pavement.

“and far too often I see pedestrians using the cyle route as an extension of the pavement” – Philip M, the M isn’t for McVities is it, because that comment certainly takes the biscuit!
This morning I saw two cycles flagrantly ignore the red traffic light in Cross St, saw another go the wrong way down Fish St and to cap it all Postman Pat came flying off the pedestrian footpath ( note the word pedestrian, meaning for persons on foot) almost into the side of me.
Like in all things a few spoil it for the many, but these actions are what irritate motor vehicle users who seem to take the brunt of traffic matters, get one run in the side of you and who pays for the damage?
I recall only a matter of weeks ago a police officer saying in this paper that they were going to stamp down on this sort of thing but not a sign of them, did you enjoy your bacon butty and mug of tea this morning officer?

Cycle paths are excellent on the longer commutes around the inner by pass but break down when you hit the medieval centre and more narrow roads like coleham, abbey forgeat is a problem because its patchy – the lane stops at junctions where you most need the protection and because of lack of parking enforcement the lane is often blocked by cars forcing you out into the traffic

Well how about they consider making the high street through to the bell stone a pedestrian area? The only veicles allowed through would be buses and taxi plus delivery vehicles during permitted times. It would make this town a far better place and there would also be no more crazy traffic hold ups we see day in day out. This would encourage more cyclists into town providing they give the town more cycle parking places.

this is a positve idea, it will save businesses money by reducing congestion so more deliveries can be made faster etc

thanks for cycling, your keeping the road free for me!!!

I think actually cycle paths are pretty good within the town. Its getting across the outer ring round to get into the town which is an issue. Bayston Hill roundabout is perhaps the exception to that rule, but come in from the north or on the bridgnorth road or from atcham and you basically have to get into a dual carriageway on a bike, scary as hell. Please can we have some crossing / under pass / foot bridge type solutions to allow people to cycle into shrewsbury from outside not just cycle around it once they drove here!

yes i agree theres been a good effort on marketing and education now but what we really want to see is physical infrastructure now, nice job on heathgates to monkmoor roundabout but we need cycle lanes and cycle parking in the town centre especially, it shouldnt take so long to deliver, awareness work can only take you so far to achieve real modal shift you need to restrict cars and invest in proper kit for bikers; – hoops, white lines, pelicans etc
