Two arrests after Shrewsbury Town fixture
Monday 9th August 2010, 4:11PM BST.
Two men were arrested for public order offences following Shrewsbury Town FC’s opening day fixture against Bradford City, police said today.
A significant policing operation was conducted by West Mercia Police for Saturday’s home game at the Greenhous Meadow as a large attendance was expected with a crowd of nearly 7,000.
Police today said there was no serious trouble but two men from Telford, a 32-year-old and a 41-year-old, were arrested close to the town’s railway station.
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said police kept an eye on groups of people milling around the town and congregating at various pubs.
He said the two men were arrested for public order offences shortly after 7pm.
The 41-year-old received a caution and the 32-year-old was issued with a fixed penalty notice.
Officers also assisted British Transport Police to monitor various groups, including several hundred returning from Crewe to Hereford.
At the stadium, stewards ejected several people for contravening stadium regulations.
Chief Inspector Martin Whitelegg said: “Officers were on duty throughout the day to ensure rival groups did not cause trouble.”
