V Festival travel – fans told don’t rely on sat navs
Saturday 7th August 2010, 11:27AM BST.
Revellers travelling to this year’s V Festival on the Shropshire-Staffordshire border have been warned not to rely on sat navs or internet route maps to get there as police prepare to close roads in a bid to beat jams and traffic chaos.
About 90,000 festival-goers are expected to descend on Weston Park from August 20 to 23, with up to 35,000 vehicles expected.
Event commander Superintendent Dave Holdway said some congestion was “inevitable” but revealed contingency plans to keep traffic moving.
Drivers travelling north on the M6 should join the M54, leave at junction 3 and follow signs along the A41 to the West Gate car park.
Motorists travelling south on the M6 should leave at junction 12 and follow signs on the A5 to the East Gate.
On leaving the site, vehicles should follow the signs that will direct them back to the motorways.
Drop-off and collection points will be signposted from both directions on the A5, as will routes for camper vans. Travel West Midlands will again be running buses for a small cost to take people from Wolverhampton and Stafford rail stations to Weston Park and back again.
Coaches and buses will use a separate gate to avoid car entrances and exits becoming congested.
Supt Holdway said only people with tickets should travel to the festival – and urged revellers to follow designated routes.
He said: “Don’t rely on sat nav or internet route maps as some roads will be closed in areas close to Weston Park. With up to 35,000 cars expected, some congestion is inevitable.”
The Highways Agency has a number of contingency plans to alleviate congestion and to get vehicles to Weston Park. Drivers can get up-to-the-minute details by phoning 08457 504030.
