Telford motorcyclist seriously hurt in M54 crash

A motorcyclist from Telford was seriously injured after his bike left a motorway carriageway and ended up on the central reservation. He had medical care at the roadside for an hour.

The 50-year-old was today in a critical but stable condition in hospital after the accident on the M54 yesterday at about 5.10pm.

He was given emergency treatment at the roadside for more than an hour before being airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A section of the westbound lane of the motorway, between Junctions Two and Three between Albrighton and Wolverhampton, was shut to allow the air ambulance to land.

It led to long delays for rush hour motorists.

John Hawker, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “On arrival at the scene the crews found a motorcycle that had left the carriageway and was found on a grassed part of the central reservation.

“The man, believed to be 50 years old, had suffered multiple serious injuries in the crash and received emergency treatment at the scene for just over an hour.

“The man’s condition was stabilised at the scene and he was airlifted to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further emergency treatment.”

He added: “The Basics doctor travelled on board the air ambulance to continue treatment.

“The hospital had been pre-alerted to the patient’s arrival and his serious injuries and a trauma team was on stand-by.”

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said that a section of the M54 had been closed due to the accident until just before 7pm.

The Central Motorway Police Group and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.
