Shropshire folk make half of open water help callouts
Thursday 5th August 2010, 7:31PM BST.
Half of the callouts over the last two months to people in difficulty in open water in the West Midlands were in Shropshire, ambulance bosses revealed today.
West Midlands Ambulance Service is urging people to take extra care in and around open water following a number of incidents across the region where people have needed emergency medical attention after swimming in rivers, reservoirs, lakes and canals.
Murray MacGregor, spokesman for the service, said: “In June and July there were 10 cases in Shropshire of people in trouble in rivers, canals and lakes.
“This is an unusually high number compared to the rest of the region and amounts to half of the total number of call outs for the West Midlands.”
He said incidents had occurred in Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Craven Arms and Chirk, near the county’s border.
Mark Gough operational service delivery director at the ambulance service, said: “Dozens of people die in water accidents each year.”
