New bank plan to help buy Lake Vyrnwy for nation
Thursday 5th August 2010, 12:31PM BST.
An all-Wales national savings bank should be set up in an attempt to buy the £11 million Lake Vyrnwy estate for the nation, it has been claimed.
Members of the Lake Vyrnwy Co-operation Campaign, which has been set up on social networking site Facebook in a bid to get a million Welsh people to buy a share of the 23,000 acres so they can belong to the people of Wales, have now called for a bank account to be set up.
The group, which had 785 members earlier today, is also appealing for more support.
Severn Trent Water has put the estate, which includes farms and other homes, up for sale with a £11 million price tag.
The sale has sparked fears for the future of the community, many of whom rent their homes.
One member of the Facebook site, Ian Hughes, wrote: “Perhaps we need an all Wales national savings bank for like-minded people who would pool their resources. For example, people chip in a pound a week and when an opportunity arises the money would be there to complete the purchase.”
The group’s creator, Heledd Wyn Hardy, from Cardiff, has supported the idea but said there needs to be a firm plan before anyone could part with their money.
She said: “We haven’t had any ‘real’ money as yet, only pledges.”
