Metal thieves target Oswestry Cambrian railway
Thursday 5th August 2010, 12:07PM BST.
Sleepers and cast iron fixings have been stolen from an Oswestry tourist railway track.
Railway volunteers believe the expensive fixings have been stolen for their scrap or melting down value.
The sleepers and fixings were stolen from the Cambrian railway route at Morton near Oswestry.
The incident is the latest theft in Shropshire involving metal which has a high value when sold on to scrap merchants.
Last week police asked scrap metal merchants to help them in their investigations into the theft of a field roller which was taken from a field near Bridgnorth.
Officers said the roller was likely to be offered or has been offered for sale as scrap metal.
And last month manhole covers were stolen from streets in villages around Oswestry with police believing they too had been sold on to scrapyards.
Brian Rowe from Cambrian Heritage Railways said members were furious.
He said: “It is the last thing we need bearing in mind how difficult it is find money for projects at the moment.
“We reckon it was stolen for scrap because there is a high price for scrap metal at the moment. We can’t afford to lose materials like this.
“If scrapyards were offered the metal I hope they would ask questions and contact the police.”
