Councillors to complain over Church Stretton parking plans
Wednesday 4th August 2010, 11:00PM BST.
Plans to keep on-street parking in Church Stretton and add more spaces in the town have come under attack from town councillors who plan to complain.
They say residents and businesses have not been consulted properly.
A formal complaint is to be lodged by Church Stretton Town Council.
It relates to plans by Shropshire Council to retain parking spaces in High Street and add four more spaces in Sandford Avenue.
It is the latest in several clashes over the future of the town.
Town councillors wanted to scrap the on-street parking in High Street in favour of widening the pavement, while traders had argued that plan would have a detrimental effect on local businesses.
Christine Harvey, clerk of Church Stretton Town Council, said: “We are writing to Shropshire Council to express our concern about the democratic process.
“No-one had the chance to discuss or debate it as part of the public consultation process and it makes a mockery of the democratic process we have just been through.
“We have gone through a lengthy consultation process and we had made our recommendations and then the new ideas were suddenly presented to us.”
The work was proposed under Church Stretton’s town centre enhancement scheme.
Samantha Tharme, Shropshire Council’s principal transport planner, said: “A proposal had been under consideration to make changes to the High Street which included removing parking space and widening the pavements.
“The council has decided not to proceed with a scheme that does not have sufficient local support as the views of the people affected are important.”
