Shropshire youngsters to meet Michael Owen and Sir Geoff Hurst
Tuesday 3rd August 2010, 5:59PM BST.
Youngsters at a Shropshire junior football club will get to meet England’s World Cup winning hero Sir Geoff Hurst and Michael Owen as part of a once-in-a-lifetime trip to play at Wembley Stadium.
Members of Bishop’s Castle Junior Football Club’s under 10s team will go to the stadium on Thursday to take part in the McDonald’s National Football Festival.
As part of the trip they will meet and have their photos taken with Mr Hurst, who scored a hat trick in the 1966 final to famously beat West Germany, and Manchester United forward Mr Owen, who is one of England’s all-time top goalscorers.
Sir Geoff’s exploits remain one of the defining success stories in the history of English football and remains the country’s only World Cup success to date.
More than 700 youngsters will be at the stadium on the day taking part in non-competitive games.
A spokesman for co-organisers McDonald’s said: “As well as playing on the hallowed turf, the young teams will also meet two of English football’s greatest ever strikers during their once-in-a-lifetime trip.”
