Winger Lionel Ainsworth needed just two words to reveal his motivation for joining Shrewsbury Town – Graham Turner.

The 22-year-old has signed a two-year deal at the Greenhous Meadow, making the move from Huddersfield Town for an undisclosed fee.

And he admits the opportunity to be re-united with Turner, under whom he was so successful at Hereford, was too good for him to turn down.

“He’s a good manager, he knows what he’s doing,” said Ainsworth.

“He gets all his players up for games – everyone responds to him in a good way. It’s a good backroom staff to work under.

“He gave me the opportunity when I was first let go from Derby at a young age.

“He believed in me and I was lucky enough to take up the challenge of playing in League Two and did very well.

“Hereford were interested in bringing me back and I love the club, it’s still in my heart, but Graham Turner nurtured me into the player that I am now.

“Under him, I think I’ll be able to get my belief back and start playing like I did before.”

Ainsworth also insists he is fully focused on his football, having earned something of a bad boy tag during his rocky spell at Huddersfield.

The former Derby and Watford man was arrested for affray in March last year following an incident in Nottingham that followed the death of his cousin Liam Munn, an amateur player.

But the charges were dropped in November and the 22-year-old hopes the future is much brighter.

“It was a bad time in my life with everything that was happening in my home life,” he said.

“It didn’t go the best, but some things don’t always go your way. All I wanted to do was to play football, hence why I went out on loan (to Brentford).

“That’s the main thing for a footballer and it’s why I’m here. I just want to get back to playing how I was a few years ago at Hereford – that was the best point of my life.”
